Hydrogen: production, the customer and project boundaries

How to describe a hydrogen project: electricity supply, electrolysis, product output, infrastructure and the status of buyer arrangements.

Electrolysis is part of a system

Electrolysis uses electricity to produce hydrogen from water. Describing such a project requires more than the electrolyser: electricity supply and the route from production to the customer also matter. The origin of that electricity matters when characterising the hydrogen produced.

The IEA discusses electrolysers and questions of demand, infrastructure and certification in its technology overview. This is general context, not confirmation of a Ukrainian project’s characteristics.

Show the project boundaries

Tillerstone’s editorial approach is to describe the proposed chain and state clearly what falls outside it:

  • Where will electricity and water come from, what is agreed and what remains an assumption?
  • Which electrolyser, operating profile and expected product output are proposed?
  • Does the budget include water treatment, compression, storage and transport?
  • Who is the buyer, what product requirements apply and what is the status of discussions?

Electrolyser capacity in MW and hydrogen output in kilograms per hour or tonnes per year are different measures. Do not present electrical input capacity as generation.

Name the status of each arrangement

Distinguish preliminary buyer interest from a signed contract, an expected connection from established terms, and a renewable-hydrogen claim from its supporting evidence. Identify open questions about the site, safety, permissions and infrastructure access. A catalogue description does not mean these checks are complete.
