Bioenergy: from feedstock to an energy project
Biomass, biogas and biomethane: technology distinctions and questions for an initial Ukrainian project outline.

Bioenergy covers different pathways from biological feedstock to energy. An initial outline should distinguish heat, electricity and gaseous fuel production. Biogas can supply heat and generation; upgrading it to biomethane opens a different route to use. These are distinct technical and commercial configurations.
The IEA explains these distinctions and the importance of methane leak management in its biogas and biomethane outlook. The source describes the sector, not assets in this catalogue.
What to include in the outline
Tillerstone’s editorial approach is to begin with the chain from feedstock to plant to buyer. Useful questions for an initial discussion include:
- Which feedstock is required, where does it come from and what do the supply arrangements confirm?
- What volumes, seasonality, storage and logistics does the outline assume?
- What is being sold: heat, electricity or biomethane? Who is the intended buyer?
- What is the position on the site, connections, permissions and residual-material handling?
State electrical capacity, thermal capacity and expected fuel output separately, with their units. One measure should not stand in for another.
Separate evidence from expectations
Keep signed agreements, negotiations and assumptions separate. Initial materials can identify available documents and open questions; confidential files follow an agreed disclosure process. A technology label alone does not establish feedstock sustainability, project readiness or financial performance.
